Mel Gibson, who has kept away from the limelight since his drunken anti-Semitic outcries in 2006, is scheduled to headline his first feature film since 2002.
The 52-year-old Hollywood actor has signed to portray a cop in "Edge of Darkness," a detective story based on a 1985 BBC miniseries.
Gibson's last leading role was in the 2002 with "Signs" and "We Were Soldiers." Gibson then directed the 2004 "The Passion of the Christ" and 2006's "Apocalypto."
Gibson will find himself on the wrong side of the law in "Edge of Darkness," playing a cop who finds deep-rooted corruption while investigating the murder of his protester daughter.
Gibson has other works in production including "Under And Alone" slated for 2008, and "Sam And George" also due in 2008.
