It may just be the worst kept secret in Hollywood but Disney has finally confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal will be their next big-screen hero in Jerry Bruckheimer's "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time", a fantasy adventure epic based on the video game franchise.
Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince of 6th Century Persia, who pairs up with Tamina, a princess to be played by Gemma Arterton, to prevent a nobleman from acquiring the Sands of Time -- a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.
Set in medieval Persia, the story of adventurous prince Dastan (Gyllenhaal) who teams up with a rival princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. Which is why after the prince was tricked by a dying Vizier to unleash the Sands of Time that turns out to destroy a kingdom and transforms its populace into ferocious demons.
In his effort to save his own kingdom and redeem his fatal mistake, it's up to the prince and the princess to return the sands to the hourglass by using the Dagger of Time, which also gives him a limited control over the flow of time.
Director Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) is scheduled to start filming in Morocco next month, pending an actors' strike delay.
There is no official movie trailer yet, but since the movie is based on the popular video game we can only assume the movie will follow the plot of the game. Below is the game trailer that gives us a good idea if what the movie should be like…

"Brokeback Mountain" At The New York City Opera In 2013
The New York City Opera commissioned Charles Wuorinen to compose an opera based on "Brokeback Mountain," the 1997 short story by Annie Proulx that became the basis for the 2005 movie starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal - the film won three Academy Awards.
The opera is scheduled to open in the spring of 2013, City Opera said Sunday. It will be City Opera's second Wuorinen premiere, following "Haroun and the Sea of Stories," which was based on a Salman Rushdie novel and opened in October 2004.
"Ever since encountering Annie Proulx's unusual story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so," Wuorinen said in a statement.
"Brokeback Mountain" was released in 2005, set against the sweeping vistas of Alberta's Rocky Mountains. The film tells the story of two young gay men - a ranch-hand and a rodeo cowboy - who meet in the summer of 1963 and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection, one whose complications, joys and tragedies provide a testament to the endurance and power of love.
Sadly, the movie was one of Heath Ledger's last films before dying of a drug overdose in January 2008.

Casting Call: Jake Gyllenhaal Set To Star As 'Prince Of Persia'
Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton will star in "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," the adaptation of Ubisoft's popular video game. Mike Newell will be directing.
In the fantasy action adventure, Gyllenhaal will portray Dastan, a young prince in 6th century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), an energetic and mysterious princess, to stop an evil nobleman from holding the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can turn back time and allow its keeper to rule the world.
Bruckheimer is producing, and Mike Stenson, Chad Oman and Patrick McCormick are executive producing.
"We've been fortunate with some our leading ladies," Bruckheimer said. "Some of them have gone on to become major movie stars, going back to Nicole Kidman in a movie I did a long time ago called 'Days of Thunder' with Tom Cruise, to Keira Knightley from 'Pirates of the Caribbean' with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom"
Bruckheimer declined to comment on the "Persia" budget other than to say, "It's not one of our smaller productions."
Production is set to start in July in Morocco and England.
Gyllenhaal next appears in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" with Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman.
Arterton is relatively new on the movie scene but already is generating heat for her work in Guy Ritchie's upcoming "RocknRolla" and the new James Bond movie, "Quantum of Solace."

Reese Witherspoon And Jake Gyllenhaal Are Getting Married!
Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal could be the next celebrity couple to get married.
Jake is planning to ask the question to Reese very soon, a source close to the actress claimed.
"They've been talking marriage for a while, they'll be formally engaged any day now. They want to spend the rest of their lives together."
The couple is seemingly taking a more conventional approach to marriage.
"This is a very serious relationship," the source said. "But Reese is very conservative and traditional. I'm sure she doesn't want her kids to see her 'living in sin.'"
